Paris- A Tennis Affair
French Open from the Roland-Garros Stadium
On June 2, I had the pleasure of seeing two of tennis greats, Novak Djokovic [1] and Serena Williams [1] play in the men's and women's singles quarterfinal match respectively. The French Open also known in France as Roland-Garros took place in the Roland-Garros stadium located in the affluent 16th arrondissement of Paris.
The quarter finals matches were played on the Philippe Chatrier court on a rather rainy day in Paris. Aside from a few pauses from the rain in both the women's and men's matches, it was a rather lovely, cool, 54F, overcast day for the match.
Men's Singles Quarter Finals Match
The quarter finals match between Novak Djokovic[1] from Serbia and Tomas Berdych[7] from Czech Republic was good match to watch. Berdych played intensely against Djokovic, but the first seed tennis champion breezed past his opponent with 6-5, 7-5, 6-3 to clench the quarterfinals.
At the end of the game, Novak Djokovic performed a salute to all the spectators; along with a ball boy, he bowed to the spectators sitting on every side of the court and raised arms up in a wave. The men's match was over, and the court was prepared for the women's match.
Women's Singles Quarter Finals Match
The quarterfinals match between Serena Williams[1] from USA, and Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstanhad to stopfor almost 15 minutes during the first set because of the rain. The first set was challenging for Serena who showed a great deal of frustration during the match. Yulia demonstrated resilience as she ran back and forth on the court in response to the ball from Serena. Fortunately for Serena the crowd favorite, the spectators were cheering loudly and beckoning to her "allez Serena!" meaning "go Serena!". Several times during the match the chair umpire had to caution the boisterous crowd with "merci", which seemed to calm the fanfare and bring silence to the court.
Serena bounced back in the second set from her loss of the first set; she pushed her way through to lead the set and maintain the lead in the third set to win the women's singles quarter finals against Yulia with 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
At the end of the game, Serena said of her opponent Yulia - “she played unbelievable and I honestly didn’t think I was going to win that in the second set but somehow I did and I’m so excited.”
It is a great experience to see one of the world Grand Slam matches here in Paris, France.
